Immaturity and Disease Severity are Independent Risk Factors to Develop Retinopathy of Prematurity

چکیده
Purpose: Document indicators of an increased risk to develop retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in low birth weight (LBW, < 1500g) infants. Methods: Retrospective chart review. Neonatal characteristics collected were birth weight, gestational age (GA), CRIB (Clinical Risk Index for Babies) score, Apgar score and indicators of respiratory, circulatory and renal instability. Small for gestational age (SGA, i.e. < 10 th percentile GA) was registered while postnatal growth was also recorded as a dichotomous variable, whether or not 150% of the birth weight was reached on day 42 of life. Results: On 284 LBW infants, 248 (87%) survived until discharge. ROP (any stage) was documented in 74 (30%) survivors of whom 41 (17%) developed stage 3 ROP. Incidence of stage 3 ROP in < 1000g and ROP in 1000-1250 birth weight cohorts was 42% and 16% respectively with almost absence of any ROP in neonates with a birth weight > 1 250g. In a logistic regression model in 248 LBW survivors, both GA (OR 0.42) and CRIB score (OR 1.35) remained independent risk factors for stage 3 ROP, resulting in 90% of cases classified correctly. Conclusions: Stage 3 ROP is almost exclusively limited to neonates with a birth weight below 1000g and retinopathy (any stage) is almost absent in neonates with a birth weight > 1 250g. Immaturity, i.e. GA at birth and CRIB score, reflecting disease severity, are the most important risk factors to develop retinopathy.

Evaluation of Risk Factors for Retinopathy of Prematurity in Preterm Neonates
Background: The most common cause of preventable blindness in children is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The most important risk factors for this disease are preterm delivery and low birth weight (LBW). This research was performed to evaluate the prevalence ofand risk factors for ROP in preterm neonates. Methods: Our research was a cross-sectional descriptive and retrospective study conduct...
متن کاملThe Incidence Rate of Retinopathy of Prematurity and Related Risk Factors: a Study on premature neonates hospitalized in two hospitals in Sari, Iran, 2014-2015
Background & Aims: Retinopathy OF prematurity (ROP) is a developmental disorder of retinal vessels in premature neonates. In recent years, because of advances in the care of neonates hospitalized in equipped Intensive care units, retinopathy of prematurity has become a major cause of blindness in those who are survived. This study assessed the incidence and severity of retinopathy and related r...
متن کاملRisk factors associated with retinopathy of prematurity among neonates in a tertiary care hospital in Nepal
Background: Retinopathy of prematurity is a vascular retinal disease that can cause blindness in premature new born babies. Several risk factors are associated with the incidence of ROP. Information and data on risk factors associated with ROP in context to Nepalese population is scarcely documented in literature. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk factors of retinop...
متن کاملRetinopathy of prematurity: risk factors and clinical management in a cohort of ELBW infants
The etiology of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is multifactorial while ROP is also frequently associated with other co-morbidity characteristics in former preterm infants. We describe the current risk factors associated with the development of pre-threshold ROP in a cohort of 267 ELBW (extreme low birth weight, i.e. < 1 000 g) infants. We hereby confirm the combined risk associated with immat...
متن کاملFrequency and Risk Factors of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Newborns Admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Hamadan
Background and Objective: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an evolutionary disorder in the retina of premature infants. Nowadays, the prevalence rate of retinopathy has increased due to the advancement of medical facilities and the increased survival of preterm infants. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence rate of ROP and its related risk factors among infants admitted to an...
